Mljet Island off the coast of Dubrovnik is said to have hosted Ulysses and the Apostle Paul. It has a beautiful secluded sandy beach area, Sapluna, and two crystal-clear saltwater lakes that today draw nature-loving vacationers and environmental scientists.

There are numerous beaches in Croatia and here is a small sampling: Near Zadar is the famous Queen’s Beach which has rich deposits of peloid mud that is said to relieve sore joints and muscles. Bacvice is Split’s most popular beach and is a sandy social hub within walking distance of the historic town center. Bacvice Beach is popular for playing picigin, a game among locals that is like water volleyball and involves acrobatic leaps. Mlaska Beach, Hvar Island has different sections popular with families and with naturists.
